Have you ever stopped to consider the vast scope of the universe? It’s a humbling thing to do!
They say if you hold up a grain of sand to the sky that the patch of sky it covers would span roughly 100 billion stars!
Wow! And Psalm 104 states that the Lord stretches out the heavens like a curtain. That’s SOME curtain! And just to give you some sense of this “curtain’s” dimension, consider the following:
- If we were able to fly from one side of our galaxy (just our lil neighborhood of the universe) to the other AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT… it would take 100,000 years to make the trip!!!
- And the Milky Way is only 1 of about 500 billion Galaxies in the universe. (Just to let you know how big the number “500 billion” is… There hasn’t even been 500 billion seconds in human history. And yet, there’s that many galaxies!)
And the Lord stretched the universe out “like a curtain?” Whew. Makes you feel kind of small, doesn’t it!
So you can see why David asks in Psalm 8 –
What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him?
In the light of such Greatness, who am I in the grand scheme of things, but just a speck of dirt floating through space?
Yes, dirt… but Dirt with Divine Breath. That Great God who spread the stars out like a curtain breathed into us– the breath of Life!
Stop and think about that for a moment. Not only is God GREAT, He is GOOD.
Psalm 8 continues with the goodness in verses 5 and 6-
- He made you… He crowned you… and He gave you…
And it makes David break out into song-
“Oh LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your Name in all the earth.”
When true greatness and true goodness come together – like it does in Psalm 8 -how can we not but give the LORD our praise?
Dirt & Divine Breath… makes for a good account of who we are in the grand scheme of things.
